Denied

Well, we've been denied coverage for the injectable IUI. Not sure what we're going to do next. We probably will appeal, but I am just so fucking sick of all of this that I really don't know what we're going to do. But I have to call my RE's insurance coordinator to see what to do next.

See, what really kills me is that we don't meet the definition of infertility in the state of Massachusetts. By law, we do not have to be given coverage.

But really, how can we not be considered infertile?

That is such crap... I am sorry you were denied. Ugh.

Just out of curiosity - what is the definition in Mass?

The definition of infertility in MA is one year of inability to conceive for unexplained reasons, a poor semen analysis for the man, or a specific diagnosis for a woman that is NOT age related.

There is a bill in our state senate to define recurrent miscarriage as a definition of infertility, but currently it is not the law. I wrote my state senator asking for this bill to pass.

How incredibly frustrating!

That is complete crap. And the narrowest definition of IF I've ever heard.

Shit, I'm so sorry. :(

And I agree - it is total crap. I'm willing to bet there's a lot of pressure to keep the definition of IF as narrow as possible due to MA's state mandated coverage. If you have to cover infertiles.... at least limit the number of people that can be considered "infertile." Such bullshit.

Thanks for the definition... I still think it's crap you got denied.

How do you 'prove' this one year of not being able to conceive? Do m/c's count against you (since you technically conceive) and the clock starts all over again??

I hope you appeal this and get approved. Perhaps your RE would be willing to write a letter on your behalf? We had to appeal through our old ins. company and our RE helped us out. Although we were still denied... but that was only b/c our ins. company required that I had to have sex with a man for a year and not get pregnant to meet their particular definition of 'infertile' (even though my RE diagnosed me as medically infertile - no amount of sex was gonna knock me up!!). Total crap... all of it.

I think ins. companies make stupid policies on purpose.
