Off-hand comments

Today in our weekly staff meeting we were talking about April Fools jokes since the first of April is coming up. My boss said one year for April Fools she sent one of her nieces a letter telling her she had been adopted and that her parents had met in line at the welfare office. The niece believed the letter and my boss had to call her and tell her it wasn't true. She said that her niece will believe absolutely anything. She was laughing.

I was uncomfortable and didn't say anything.

That's so bizarre and inappropriate.

OMG! That is one of the most horrible "jokes" I've ever heard about. Absoloutly awful. I can't believe she was bragging about her horrendous behaviour. N-O-T F-U-N-N-Y

Holy insensitive, batman! That is SO inappropriate! I'm horrified. This just goes to show that there needs to be more public education about things like infertility and adoption, and the feelings of all those involved with these situations.

Good grief. So not funny. I would have been uncomfortable, too.

oh rachel, I would be tempted to approach your boss afterwards and say how inappropriate that comment was. how awful.

Wow, that's about as funny as a brick in the face.

Why? Why would you leave that on the table? Why would you let someone walk away thinking that was ok and acceptable.

One day you will be confronted with a situation where adoption is shown in a bad light... only your child will be with you. If you let your uncomfortableness rule you - you will send the message to your child that adoption is bad/wrong, etc.

Sounds like your boss is kind of an idiot. And kind of mean-spirited as well, if she knows her niece is so trusting and yet takes such pleasure in tricking her. Watch your back.

Honestly, that is horrifying. How could anyone think that was funny? Sorry you had to sit through that.

How awful! Not. Funny. At. All.

(BTW, my friend LOVES the hat you made that I purchased from the UTERUS Etsy shop.)

Picking my jaw up off the floor. Incredible (and not in a good way).

How is your tongue?

That must have taken some restraint.

I would have speechless, too.

I think uncomfortable is an under statement. I don't know exactly what I would have felt. But pity comes to mind if your boss knew what ass she made out of herself with that comment.

OMG, that is horribly cruel! I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

Wow. That's incredibly tactless on many levels.

That is disgustingly inappropriate. I wish I'd been there to tell your boss what I thought of her oh-so-hilarious april fools joke. Asshat. Complete, utter asshat for playing a shitty joke on a seemingly sweet/gullible niece.

That is a pathetic excuse for a human. Sorry that you have to put up with that. Here from LFCA.

Wow. There is nothing to say to that except rude, rude, rude, with tactless piled on top of that.

What amazes me most is that someone that stupid would want to admit it out loud.

I guess she is too stupid to even realize how stupid.

Oh Rachel,

I feel for you soooo much. As a birthmother (17 years in) and now struggling with IF I totally feel that this was so inapproprate. I have had to deal with so many misconceptions over the years as to why I put my son up for adoption and it is so hurtful how ignorant people are. Adoption is not a joke and should never be joked about.

Please feel free to email at any time with any questions you might have regarding birthmothers etc.

Hugs
